ACADEMIC DECATHLON
Academic Decathlon is an organization designed to help students prepare
for a regional, statewide, and national academic competition. The Competition
involves ten different areas: literature and language, fine art, music,
science, mathematics, social science, speech (prepared and impromptu),
interview, essay-writing, and the super quiz. Each competing team consists
of nine members and one alternate. The team members represent three
different grade point categories; three members being from the 3.7-4.0
category (honors), three members from the 2.0-3.7 category (scholastic)
and three being from the 2.0 and below category (varsity). We meet weekly
on Monday nights, beginning in the fall, to review material that will
be used in the competitions.
Each year the Academic Decathlon competition designates a theme. All
of the material tested is based on the chosen theme.
Students prepare for the regional competition which takes place in
the first week of February each year and for the state competition which
takes place during the first week of March. The winner of the state
competition, held in Olympia at a Puget Sound Community College, goes
on to nationals. Locations for national competitions are announced annually.
